I was Eli If I could tell you what I left behind I’d talk of all the things that made my life completely fine Like driving truck for the bakery Every morning down on Main Street For my friends and their families And singing songs with the choir to find A bit of God and some peace of mind Oh, what I left behind I was Eli
Her name was Laura A beautiful woman and my wife to be It was long ago And far away, we were just 23 On the hill near the old town square We’d swing for hours on the front porch chair And talk about our future there Or sit and watch as the cars went by Stare at nothing but blue skies And all of what I left behind I was Eli
So anyway, Laura My beautiful wife had become the mother of our three But when I got sick in 32, she was Expecting our third I thought I never would see One Sunday morning the sun did rise And I was feeling so alive When they brought my new son to my side I got to gaze to my little boy’s eyes Hold him close and say all my goodbyes Before I left him all behind I was Eli
I drove truck for the bakery Every morning down on Main Street For all my friends and their families I sang songs with the choir to find A little bit of God and some peace of mind And I was feeling so alive Before I left it all behind I was Eli
